Following Main Street, America Blog - November 15, 2011
After our stay in Sedona and then Jerome, AZ, we picked up Route 66 again, heading west. The plan was to follow it as far as we could before we had to deviate toward Las Vegas. We spent nights in Williams and then Kingman, but made plenty of stops along the way. My favorite two shooting stops were the town of Seligman and the Hackberry general store.
Seligman is a [miniscule] town frozen in time. You can still order food at the Snow Cap or get your hair cut by Angel, the local barber who played a big role in keeping the town alive. There are old cars still in front of many of the building, though because of the popularity of the recent movie “Cars,” many of the windshields don those cartoon eyeballs you see in the Pixar flick. (I had never actually seen “Cars” but made a point to watch it the night after we passed through this town and it was awesome.)
Hackberry is a small complex consisting of a general store and some vintage cars and other items spread around the area. I loved the old gas pumps and soda machines, but my favorite was the vintage car out front. Its headlights faced downward just a tad and at different angles in such a way that they looked like eyes and expressed the personality of the car. (They kind of reminded me of the eyes on the “little guys” in the movie “Batteries not Included.”
After Kingman, we finally had to deviate from the Mother Road and head toward Vegas. We would be flying out of LV for our African safari and had a lot of things to take care of before hand. More to come…
