Are you ready for some football? Uncategorized - October 13, 2008

I really give a lot of credit to sports shooters. It’s not easy. Your subjects tend to be moving, ya know? And fast. I was shooting my brother and about 20 of his friends playing some football this weekend. Since I was wandering on the field, it was a balance between getting good close shots of the action and not getting run over by the charging beasts in wild pursuit of the ball. I was glad that most of the field was in the shade a lot of the time, but it makes me realize the limitations of the camera (my camera anyway) to shoot at 200 mm, i had to bump the iso to 800, which for the D200 is not a good thing. And since i was underexposing so as not to blow out the patches of sun, when i brought light to certain areas the noise really came out. Im sure this wouldnt be an issue in a real stadium with hard-core lights, but for me, I was thankful for dfine, my noise-reduction software! Anyway, I had a good time and look forward to another go at it. Like shooting kids, I think this is something you get a lot better with after some a lot of practice!

Karen – What shutter speed were you getting at ISO 800? I just shot an evening homecomming game and I had to set the D200 to ISO 1000 just to get 1/60 – 1/125. I was using the 70-200 f/2.8
It’s fun though isn’t it. I can’t wait to shoot another.
Hi Ken,
I was at about the same place you were – struggling to stay above 125. Kinda frustrating when im shooting all the way at 2oo. In some instances I think that the only reason I was able to get it fast enough was because the field was in the shade, but there were other patches of sun that my camera was picking up in matrix metering.
Basically, I hope I can get the D3 one day for low noise shooting at a glorious 3200!
