Canyons, and Arches, and Landscapes, Oh My! Blog, Uncategorized - May 26, 2011
Since our first visit to Moab was cut short about two weeks ago, we returned after our week of travel. (air travel, that is.) While last time, we focused on Canyonlands National Park, this time we focused on Arches National Park. This was actually more convenient, because Arches is MUCH closer to Moab, and therefore more easily accessible.
I made a brief visit to Arches during our last visit, but was rushed and didn’t get to see it the way I should have. This time, I saw a LOT. And man, if you’ve never been to this part of the country, you’re really missing out. Seriously. You see rock formations here that look like they shouldn’t be possible. But there they are. Right in front of you. In all their glory.
It actually amazes me that people spend their whole lives going on “trips” to sunny beaches, all inclusive resorts and Disney World, yet never see this amazing stuff that’s out there. And this “stuff” is for REAL! Not just a canned vacation. (Note: I love Disney and pretty beaches – there’s a place and time for them, for sure. But why miss out on all the natural wonders out there???)
We saw a lot in Arches, my favorite being Delicate Arch. This arch is pretty much the iconic symbol for Utah. It’s even on their license plates. And it’s also a must for every photographer visiting the area. And I can see why. WOW. Delicate Arch, at sunset, is spectacular, whether you’re a photographer or not. It’s a vigorous hike to get up there, but totally worth it.
Some of my other highlights from the park were the Windows section (also great for sunset), Landscape Arch and Sand Dune Arch, located inside “The Fins”. The whole place is just so unique that it’s hard for words to do it justice. Hopefully the images will help!
And as if the week weren’t good enough, our friend Sandy, and her husband Earl, met us in Moab, and they even camped in the same RV park as us. Woot! It was great to catch up and go shooting with them before we had to move on.
Next stop: Zion.
More to come…..
